Is this the best way to become a nurse? And do you think this sounds promising?
I have an interview at the Nurse Staff Bank, they want my birth certificate and bank details. Long story short, i have a BTEC in Health Care and have done previous work in care homes.
I want to go into Auxillary nursing but maybe eventually University. Is this the right step? Ive also got a course planned to go on if i don't get through. Anyone who is a nurse or is training know if this is the right move? Thanks x
I think it's a good step in the right direction. I'm a student nurse & also a bank Health Care Assistant (aka Auxiliary) at the hospital. I worked for many years as a Care Assistant in a nursing home & working in the hospital is a very different experience. Working as an HCA will give you an insight into nursing & if you do go to uni you'll be glad of the shifts because the bursary for nursing isn't great. If you can get a permanent position as an HCA, after a year the hospital trust might sponsor you on secondment to train as a nurse.
Doing an Access course is a good idea but. I did one last year, it's good preparation for uni & as I don't have A-levels it gave the qualification I needed to apply for the degree. Although you can train as a nurse through the diploma or degree route at the moment, the diploma will be no more as of 2013. However some uni's have already dropped it & many won't be running it after this Septembers intake. Contrary to what the first poster said the Access course doesn't guarantee you a place at uni, it gives the qualification to apply. And as for a senior carer not learning anything on placement because "they're already trained", sorry that's just laughable. If that was the case there'd be no such thing as qualified nurses. I've got 19 years care assistant experience but it doesn't make me a nurse. Aside from the academic training I'm learning practical skills on placement that legally I'm not allowed to do as an HCA. So don't be put off, go for the job interview, it won't hold you back at all.
